Low back pain can affect sitting, bending, lifting, walking, sleep and exercise. Physiotherapy assessment looks at how your symptoms behave and what movements or activities are limited.

Understanding Low Back Pain

What Is Low Back Pain?

Low back pain can affect sitting, bending, lifting, walking, sleep and exercise. Physiotherapy assessment looks at how your symptoms behave and what movements or activities are limited. Because symptoms and functional limitations can have more than one contributing factor, care should begin with an individualized assessment rather than a one-size-fits-all plan.

Common symptoms and concerns

Common Signs and Symptoms of Low Back Pain

Symptoms can vary from person to person and may have more than one possible cause. A physiotherapy assessment helps determine what may be contributing to yours.

  • Pain or aching across the lower back
  • Stiffness after sitting or inactivity
  • Pain with bending, lifting or prolonged positions
  • Reduced confidence with work, exercise or daily movement
Safety first

When back or leg symptoms need urgent care

Seek immediate medical attention if back or sciatic symptoms are accompanied by new bowel or bladder problems, or new numbness or loss of feeling in the groin, pelvic area or legs. These symptoms can occur with serious compression of the nerves at the base of the spine and should not wait for a routine physiotherapy appointment.

This is not a complete list of emergencies. Severe or rapidly worsening neurological symptoms should be assessed urgently.

Understanding contributing factors

What May Contribute to Low Back Pain?

There is not always one single cause. Symptoms may reflect a combination of tissue irritation, movement demands, previous injury, strength, mobility and other individual factors.

A recent change in activity or lifting demands

Muscle or joint irritation

Reduced strength, mobility or movement tolerance

Disc, nerve or age-related changes that may contribute to symptoms

When to have it assessed

When Should You Consider Physiotherapy?

An assessment can be useful when symptoms are interfering with daily life, keep returning, or leave you unsure about how to move and progress safely.

  • Symptoms or limitations are affecting work, sleep, walking, exercise or everyday activities
  • You are avoiding movement or activity because you are unsure what is safe
  • The problem improves and returns repeatedly
  • You notice reduced strength, mobility, balance or confidence
  • You are trying to return to work, sport, exercise or normal daily activity
  • You want a clearer plan for what to do next and how to progress safely

Your first visit

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Your first visit starts with a conversation about your symptoms, health history, daily activities and recovery goals. Your physiotherapist then completes an assessment based on your presentation and explains the findings in plain language. Before you leave, you should have a clearer understanding of what may be contributing to the problem, what you can begin doing safely, and what the next steps in your rehabilitation plan may look like.

How long does recovery take?

Recovery time varies depending on the condition, how long symptoms have been present, your overall health, activity demands and how your body responds to treatment. We track progress and adjust the plan as needed.

When should I book an assessment?

Consider an assessment when symptoms are limiting movement, sleep, work, exercise or everyday activity, when the problem keeps returning, or when you are unsure how to progress safely.
