What Is Concussion & Post-Concussion Syndrome?
Concussion can affect headache, dizziness, balance, vision, neck comfort, concentration and tolerance for physical activity. Rehabilitation is tailored to the symptom pattern and stage of recovery. Because symptoms and functional limitations can have more than one contributing factor, care should begin with an individualized assessment rather than a one-size-fits-all plan.
Common Signs and Symptoms of Concussion & Post-Concussion Syndrome
Symptoms can vary from person to person and may have more than one possible cause. A physiotherapy assessment helps determine what may be contributing to yours.
- Headache or pressure in the head
- Dizziness or balance changes
- Visual or motion sensitivity
- Difficulty returning to work, school, exercise or sport
When to seek urgent medical care
If a hit to the head, neck, face or body may have caused a concussion, stop the activity and seek medical assessment. Call 911 or seek emergency care right away for loss of consciousness, a seizure or convulsion, repeated vomiting, a severe or worsening headache, double vision, or new weakness, tingling or burning in the arms or legs.
This is not a complete list of emergencies. If symptoms are severe, rapidly worsening, or you are unsure whether the situation is urgent, seek immediate medical care.
What May Contribute to Concussion & Post-Concussion Syndrome?
There is not always one single cause. Symptoms may reflect a combination of tissue irritation, movement demands, previous injury, strength, mobility and other individual factors.
A force to the head or body causing rapid brain movement
Associated neck injury
Vestibular or visual-system involvement
Reduced exercise tolerance during recovery
